Issue 8_Focus from the AOP_August 2026 - Flipbook - Page 6
Great news! A joint effort between creator groups, including the AOP, set up and officially launched
a Government e-petition asking for generative-AI transparency. We’ve received an incredible
response, reaching over 10,000 signatures two months early, by mid-August.
Back in March 2026, the Government published its Report on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence
(https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/report-and-impact-assessment-on-copyright-andartificial-intelligence) which concluded that further work was needed. As part of this work, they are
considering what role greater transparency could play and how different approaches would work in
practice.

Creator Groups’ Transparency Petition over Gen-AI use
reaches over 10k signatures… What happens next?
In response, the Government issued a statement, commenting:
“The Government has committed to looking at best practice on input transparency as part of a
review of creator control announced in March.
This work will inform whether there is an appropriate role for government, including consideration of proposals
such as the statutory transparency duty proposed by the petition.
Any future action must help creators and rightsholders protect and license their works, while enabling responsible
AI innovation."

ACTION: What next? We need to keep up the pressure and get this petition debated in Parliament, so we
need to get to 100,000 signatures. Tell your colleagues, family and friends to sign this and show how much
we all care about creators' livelihoods and the need for transparency.

Why are we petitioning? Transparency is the foundation of a functioning copyright system in the age of generativeAI. Without visibility into what models are trained on and how creators’ works influence outputs, copyright cannot
be enforced. This impacts every creative sector and every creator whose works are routinely scraped without
permission. So please do encourage everyone you know to support it.
